I never really understood why they stopped making animal insulins, to begin with. I know that some people had issues with the impurities in older insulins, causing their immune systems to make antibodies against the injected insulin. But, even by the time I was diagnosed in the late '70's, much of that had already been dealt with.
Next thing we knew, we were being told it would be "better" to have insulin that more closely resembled human insulin. I never understood that, either, since I knew that my immune system had waged war on my own beta cells.
So, why did we get synthetic insulins anyway? Analogues are one step beyond synthetic, but they are cooked up in a lab, too.
